Located near downtown Kansas City, The Westin Crown Center Hotel is one of Kansas City's finest hotels.  The Westin is in an excellent location, it is only a few blocks from the Power and Light District, downtown Kansas City and Union Station.  The hotel also has it's own shopping mall attached to the hotel, and The Westin Crown Center hotel has great Kansas City restaurants like Streetcar Named Desire.

There is a bus station directly in front of the hotel and shopping mall, and there are also plenty of cabs ready to whisk you away to any of Kansas City's great tourist destinations.  The lobby of the Westin hotel is very luxurious with a great bar just inside the front door, a very unique nature area with running water, and a grand piano in the lobby that used to be played by the great Harry Jenks.  The best thing about the Westin is the fact that there is an above ground glass walkway that leads to Union Station just right across the street.  Parking is free on weekends in the mall garage, and valet parking is also available.  Reasonably priced hotel rooms also offer balconies if you prefer.  You can also access the roof for an incredible view of downtown Kansas City.

Hyatt Kansas City Hotel near Downtown

The Hyatt Regency Kansas City
2345 McGee Street, Kansas City -(816) 421-1234

One of the most fascinating hotels in Kansas City, The Hyatt Regency has long been a part of Kansas City history.  The first thing that you might notice about this hotel is the odd looking disc perched on the top of the building.  This is a rotating restaurant called The Skies Restaurant.  The restaurant rotates at approximately 90 minutes per hour, the perfect amount of time to see the entire city of Kansas City during your meal or cocktails.  We found that this location is perfect for the 4th of July as you get to see all of the major fireworks displays in town!

Hyatt Walkway Collapse
The Hyatt has it's own tale of destruction, death and subsequent haunting.  On July 17th, 1981 the nations largest structural disaster occurred when the Hyatt's skywalk collapsed during an evening tea party killing 114 people.  The lobby contained 3 elevated skywalks overlooking the lobby floor from 3 levels up.  The structure of the skywalks was faulty.  Havens Steel Company rejected the original plan for the structure of the skywalks and the decision proved to be fatal when the highest elevated skywalk on the 4th floor collapsed onto the crowded 2nd floor skywalk directly below.  To this day I get chills every time I am in the Hyatt Regency lobby.  The Hyatt Skywalk Memorial Foundation has gained permission to erect a monument to the collapse in a nearby park in 2012.

The Hotel Savoy near the Power and Light District in Kansas City is one of the oldest hotels in the Midwest.  Built in 1888, The Savoy Hotel was a luxury hotel with a rooftop garden, a lavish restaurant and finest of everything.  Many famous people stayed at the Hotel Savoy over the years including Teddy Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Marie Dressler, W.C. Fields, Will Rogers, Lillian Russell, Sara Bernhardt, and John D. Rockefeller.  Although it was never mentioned what hotel it was, I believe that the Hotel Savoy was also the hotel where Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham was arrested when he broke into the kitchen late at night after a concert looking for food.

Haunting
The Hotel Savoy has always been rumored to be haunted and has been featured on several TV shows and in books about haunting.  Currently a
haunted houses tour makes a stop at The Hotel Savoy to tell the tales of hauntings such as the famous apartment 505 in the hotel - this is the room where Betsy Ward is known to haunt regularly. There is another ghost resident at The Savoy. His name is Fred Lightner and he has been seen by several hotel residents haunting his former room. Fred Lightner's wife remained in the hotel for years after her husband's death. A guest of the hotel went to Mrs. Lightner's room to borrow something and heard her talking to someone before answering the door. When she answered the door there was a man in a double breasted 30's era suit standing next to her, the figure of the man was very grey and slightly faded. The figure of the man suddenly vanished and the guest asked Mrs. Lightner if she saw the man's figure as well. To this she replied "Oh, yes, that's my husband Fred". Mrs. Lightner has since passed on but it is said that Fred still haunts several rooms at The Savoy to this day.
